Precious Metals for Your Jewelry – What to Know

Precious metals are sometimes confusing.

Yet – here you are. You are making a commitment to or marrying a partner you’ve chosen to spend the rest of your life with. If you choose to purchase commitment jewelry, like an engagement or wedding band, the following will help you quickly select the type of jewelry metal that is best suited for you and for your lifestyle.Need help with precious metals for your bridal jewelry?

Who should buy Platinum?

You appreciate fine quality jewelry and want to be able to pass it on to someone from the next generation. You prefer the classic white color and are willing to spend a small premium for the noblest of all precious metals.

Why should you buy Platinum?

Fine Platinum jewelry is usually 95% pure, certified by the stamp – PLAT. Platinum is 100% hypoallergenic and cloud white in color so there is never a reason that it needs to be plated. Platinum can be combined with other colors and types of precious metals so design possibilities are limitless. Platinum is considered to be the best precious metal to protect expensive diamonds. Like all precious metal, Platinum scratches. Unlike the other precious metals, when Platinum scratches, no metal is lost. Platinum doesn’t wear down and get thinner and lighter in weight over time so Platinum jewelry can almost always be reconstructed by an experienced platinum craftsperson. Even a century later. Platinum has a premium intrinsic value.

What to AVOID!

Strong opinions about platinum, for or against, obscure the facts and should not be relevant to your decision making. Because Platinum is such a dynamic precious metal, it isn’t available everywhere, and not every jeweler is equipped or experienced enough to work on it. Beware of jewelers who advise you against Platinum. This is easily avoided by using a reputable retailer.

Want to dig deeper? Ask us a question about Platinum.

If you are looking for a splash of color in your jewelry than Gold is your best choice. You like the tradition of Gold, the way the word rolls off of your tongue…Gold.

Why should you buy Gold?

Gold is probably the most readily available precious metal jewelry product and smart shoppers can find good value because of abundant availability. Gold is almost always mixed with less valuable metals in order to make it harder or to change the color from its natural color, which is Gold, of course, so it lends itself to a lot of different creative applications. As a whole, the jewelry industry is probably most knowledgeable about gold and can usually be counted on to give accurate advice to consumers. More bench jewelers are experienced at working with gold than Platinum or Palladium. As one of the precious metals, Gold has a premium intrinsic value.

What to AVOID!

There are so many different mixtures of gold in the different products available today it is hard to compare quality and even harder to compare value. Do not have unrealistic expectations; if you wear your Gold jewelry every day, it will wear down over time. Some Gold jewelry needs constant plating to maintain the color it is when purchased. Because there isn’t one purity for Gold, it is an easy product for dishonest people to utilize in scams. Play it safe. Do not buy Gold jewelry of any type except from a reputable retailer!

BUYER BEWARE! Gold plating products are often over sold and misrepresented in a way that might lead a consumer to think they are getting gold value. The truth is that the Gold on plated jewelry is worth pennies to dollars. That is because it also falls under the category – Costume Jewelry.

Want to dig deeper? Ask us a question about Gold.

Who should buy Palladium?

You’re a trendsetter who wants a crisp white piece of jewelry with the always white characteristic of Platinum but a better value buy. You do the research, you researched Palladium and you get it!

Why should you buy Palladium?

Palladium jewelry is almost always 95% palladium pure, certified by the stamp – PALL. Palladium is only available in white. Palladium can be combined with other colors and types of precious metals so design possibilities are limitless. Palladium is often referred to as Platinum’s kid sibling, without a real reputation of its own, but it is an unfair characterization. As a Precious Metal alternative to white Gold because it is really white and does not have to be plated, Palladium is often less expensive too. It has a funky stormy white sky hue and stones look great set in it.

What to AVOID!

Good, honest information about Palladium jewelry can be hard to separate from the marketing done for and against it. Because Palladium is such a dynamic precious metal, it isn’t available everywhere, and not every jeweler is equipped or experienced enough to work on it. This is easily remedied by using a reputable retailer that has a good Palladium supplier. Like jewelry made from Gold, Palladium scratches and wears down over time.

Want to dig deeper? Ask us a question about Palladium.

About Silver

Silver is the most affordable of the precious metals. Larger designs and even fashion accessories like belt buckles can be produced without breaking the bank. Silver is soft and even Sterling Silver (92.5% Silver/7.5% hardening metal) will not hold up to a vigorous lifestyle unless the jewelry is made very heavy. That usually doesn’t translate well into wedding and engagement jewelry. Although it can be found by a persistent customer, Silver is not readily available as wedding and engagement jewelry. Platinum and Gold have dominated this category since it became traditional.

Want to dig deeper? Ask us a question about Silver.

Now you might be thinking – “Okay. I know more about precious metals. But I don’t want to buy something just off the shelf. I want my own design.”

If that’s the case, then Custom Shop can help.

Ever Notice the Jewelry Worn on Real Housewives?

Real Housewives Lisa Vanderpump jewelryThe two guilty pleasures of mine – the Real Housewives reality show and jewelry – are near and dear to my heart. And quite frankly, they feed into one another. Am I the only one to notice the truly remarkable pieces worn on the show? Sometimes I feel that way!

With the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills new season just starting, the number of magnificent pieces residing in the closets never ceases to amaze me. I mean – it’s really difficult to even say whose jewelry collection takes the cake – Erika Jayne or Lisa Vanderpump? It’s a tough call.

I am not proud to admit this, but I can truly gush and gaze over their various rings, bracelets, necklaces that are sported so casually. In fact, some of the housewives are decked out in the diamonds just taking the dog for a walk.

This is obviously to the extreme of luxury as that is seemingly the purpose of the Real Housewives series. However, there is something to be said for those stable, glamorous pieces of jewelry in one’s collection. Just like the ladies on the show, I think that a fine piece of jewelry is appropriate for many occasions and dresses up any outfit. Whether it’s a flashy bracelet or simple studded earring set, the right piece of jewelry makes a statement and be the highlight of an outfit. As the housewives make more than clear – a diamond can suit any occasion.

My appreciation for fine jewelry stems from the fact that I find it to be true art. Art that can be worn and appreciated by others and most importantly oneself. Regardless of how glamorous one’s everyday life is, every woman deserves to feel glamorous, gushed and gazed over. Embrace your inner Real Housewives and wear your favorite piece of jewelry – no matter whatever the occasion. It is okay to stand out and catch the eye of others!

Stackable Rings are Becoming the New Wedding Band

Stackable rings make great wedding bands.

Brides are beginning to stray from the typical wedding band fashion as stackable rings are becoming increasingly popular. This trend is in part due to a newfound appreciation for the wedding band as an individual statement.

Traditionally the wedding band is simply stacked with the engagement ring and often masked by its glitz. However, this is now being challenged through the placement of multiple wedding bands on a single finger. In some cases, they are worn on a finger different from the engagement ring. This concept first emerged when brides began adding a third ring to signify a special moment such as a birth or anniversary. Now this single addition is being surpassed.

Stackable rings have evolved the wedding band search into a more creative process. There are endless possibilities to mix and match stones, textures, shapes, sizes and metals – creating a unique set just for one.

This is where the fun begins! Gone are the days when one had to pick a metal and stick with it. Now there is the idea that silver and yellow or rose gold can be coordinated to bring out the best in one another. Then comes in the choice of texture – another feature with many options. One can choose from braided, twisted, hammered, matte, rope, bead or cross hatch.

The intricacy of detail paid to each band adds to a specialization matched by few others. Despite each stackable ring being incredibly unique on it’s own, when combined makes for a rather understated statement. This is achieved as each ring chosen embellishes one another in lieu of masking.

There are not many cases where such collective contrast can transcend into unity. Stackable wedding rings are approaching a new frontier of wear-ability. Contrary to the popular belief that “less is more,” the additional bands are appealing to the everyday bride that desires a noticeable yet staple accessory. Its specialized detail can freshen any look without overpowering it.

However, the ultimate attraction of stackable wedding rings is determined by the individual themselves, as rings are chosen upon their unique vision.

Growing Popularity of Colored Diamonds

ring with brown diamonds

Ladies’ diamond eternity band set with alternating brown diamonds.

Roughly 1 out of 10,000 carats mined today represent “fancy” colored diamonds. Such scarcity eludes to a sense of exclusiveness that is very intriguing to today’s consumer.

Colored diamonds vary in tone, which is the ultimate determinant of price. A deeper color tone signifies greater rarity and consequently a higher price. Over the years, demand for colored diamonds has increased tremendously, one to note particularly would be the yellow diamond.

Growth can also be attributable to fashion trends and newfound affordability. The trendsetters of the fashion industry have adopted bright accessories as an essential to any ensemble, and it is the yellow diamond has evolved into exactly that piece. The yellow diamond acts as a pop of color unique to it’s “classic” diamond opponent. Contrary to it’s exclusive reputation the price tag is a surprisingly affordable option when diamond shopping.

Newfound affordability coupled with a reputation of luxury makes the yellow diamond extremely popular addition to one’s essential accessories.

Alternative Metals vs Precious Metals for Wedding Bands

tungsten-wedding-band

A wedding band is not only a symbol of love and commitment, it can be a lasting family heirloom to be treasured from generation to generation. With the surging popularity of alternative metals tungsten (which can break – see picture), titanium and cobalt, more and more men are settling for a lesser wedding band. Whether found in a jewelry store for $300 or online for $30, alternative metals have a place in the working world, but their place in the wedding world may not be as practical. Precious metals have value throughout the years. Alternative metals do not. While most brides would not think about a wedding cake made from a mix in a microwave, many grooms settle for the cheapest wedding band available. By why?

The Argument for Precious Metals
Precious metal wedding bands can be refinished and resized a reasonable amount during the life of the ring.  While gold scratches off, platinum and palladium wedding bands lose little mass when they are refinished. Many jewelers will say that platinum scratches easily. The truth is that the platinum is being pushed around, and a platinum ring will not lose much mass due to normal wear-and tear. Platinum is worth the investment.

Why is Resizing and Refinishing a Ring Important?
According to Fitness.com, most adults’ activity level decreases as they get older, and therefore are more likely to gain weight. In a new study published in the journal Families, Systems, & Health (as reported by WomensHealth.com), men are more likely to gain weight than single guys as they get older as well. Married men surveyed were 25 percent more likely to be overweight; therefore, it can be estimated that one in four men have to be concerned that their finger size will change.

With the above highlighted facts in mind, brides and grooms-to-be (particularly the grooms) should keep precious metals in the front of their minds as their metal of choice. Yes – with men, cost is likely an issue after spending (and in many cases overspending) on the wedding venue, cake, catering, invitations and a laundry list of other wedding-related needs. Many times, a man getting married has spent little on jewelry for themselves, and therefore may be reluctant to spend a lot on a wedding band. But this should change. If it’s cheap, it has its drawbacks. The HuffingtonPost.com illustrates how the average couple spends between $1,000 and $1,600 on their wedding bands. Keeping your wedding band precious metal also has an added incentive – a father can hand his wedding band down to his son or grandson, and it will have value. An alternative metal wedding band has as much value as materials found in Home Depot. Let the hardware store sell you tungsten and titanium for your tools. Let your jeweler sell you platinum, palladium or gold as your bridal jewelry.

Need more facts for both alternative and precious metals? Contact Novell today!

Stories Behind Wedding Band and Engagement Rings

wedding-ring-blog-image

Almost every single day somebody in the world gets married. It is a custom that is part of almost every society all throughout the planet, yet not a lot pf brides and grooms-to-be are up-to-date about stories behind their bridal jewelry. If you are one of those brides or grooms, here’s a few  bridal jewelry tidbits that you may find interesting. You can even use a fact at each reception place setting to get the conversation started among your guests.

Please note: These facts have been compiled from a wide variety of sources, and are presented for entertainment purposes only.

  • The first wedding rings of woven and braided reeds and rushes were exchanged by a new bride and groom in Egypt well over 4,000 years ago!
  • In Ireland it was once thought to be bad luck if your wedding ring was made of any material other than gold.
  • In parts of the world, the superstition goes that wedding rings have to fit perfectly well on the wearer’s fingers or various types of bad luck will visit.
  • The ancient Egyptians and later other civilizations wore their wedding rings on the same finger that is used in many cultures today.
  • In the medieval days, an English groom would say “in the name of the father, the son, and the holy spirit” while putting the ring part way onto the bride’s thumb and next two fingers.
  • Legend has it that the vein in the “wedding ring finger” (third finger, left hand) led directly to the heart.
  • Using metal for making wedding rings became popular over time, but they were usually far from perfectly round and they often had gems put into them.
  • Very early in time, wedding rings were made from brass and copper. However, the Romans preferred to use iron.
  • Back in the old days, if a person was wealthy, they often showed that fact to others by the jewelry they wore.
  • In the 1600s, silver was sometimes being used for rings and some wedding rings were having words of love, hope, and devotion put in them.
  • Until the 18th century, diamond mines were generally only found in India.
  • Most natural diamonds found in mines are one million to three million years old.
  • Diamonds are created deep within the Earth. In many cases – 75 miles or deeper.
  • Diamonds are made of pure carbon. And only a diamond cuts another diamond.
  • 80 percent of the world’s diamonds are not suitable for jewelry – including wedding bands.
  • Black diamonds are made up of carbon atoms and small amounts of hydrogen. This has led some people to believe black diamonds were formed in space, and have literally crashed to the Earth!
  • Platinum is a white metal, but unlike gold it is used in jewelry in almost its pure form (approximately 95% pure).

Happy Wedding!

More about Novell Wedding Bands

Thirty-one years of award winning wedding band designs – trending and changing like the people who wear them.

Novell Select represents the very best and most popular work we’ve done by combining bands from our Max Patrick, Z*ART, NQP, and core Novell Collections.

With over 20,000 wedding band designs in our catalogue of work, we’ve streamlined the selection process by cherry picking styles and creating groups.

They are:

INSIDE OUT bands are one color on the inside and another on the outside. For example, signature designs for men are typically rose gold on the inside and white gold or platinum on the outside. This ever-expanding category is one of our most popular and offers designs from uncomplicated to intricate. For manufacturing and plating reasons, INSIDE OUT bands are only available in precious metal.

COLORS is a blend of designs that are popular in yellow, rose, two- or three-tone gold. Everyday jewelry is being redefined in bursts of color. And wedding bands are no exception. This is our fastest growing category!

DIAMOND bands bring stone to precious metal. Whether understated or serious-statement designs, somewhere in this collection is a band for that distinctive men’s diamond band customer. Many of the DIAMOND designs are available as alloy or silver samples.

ORGANICS are hand-forged-background textures that can be put on Novell precious-metal bands. From sand to lava, tree bark to ravine, supple to severe, organics speaks to those who identify with one of the many moods of Mother Earth

CIRCLES bands are stackable in groups or used as spacers. Shapes and textures are made by machine and by hand with over thirty choices and so many combinations that you – or your customer – will never really have to make up their mind. Diversity is a state of jewelry.

• Our TOP 20 wedding band designs literally never go out of style. See a design but want it in a different width? How about a different finish? Or maybe even add diamonds, change them or take them away? Just ask! Almost all wedding band designs can be made in platinum, palladium or gold.

TRENDING are the top selling designs in the SELECT Collection. As real-world trending of styles changes, so does this collection, although a lot of our most popular designs stand the test of time. Excellence is always in fashion.

What is Novell’s Custom Shop?

Novell is extremely excited to introduce our new Custom Shop division, where our state of the art manufacturing facility brings the independent retail jeweler an easy way to say – “Yes, I can custom make that for you.”

Custom Shop offers 3D printing, so your customers can try on their jewelry before it’s put into production. Here are more Custom Shop capabilities:

• We provide price quotes and CAD renderings within forty-eight hours for customer approval.
• Finished pieces are delivered within three to four weeks.
• Every creation is 100% made in America, so there’s no waiting for your order to arrive from overseas.
• Our domestic manufacturing muscle, with casting facilities, an extensive machine shop, and a skilled hand fabricating staff, gives our authorized retailers a clear path to market advantage.
• Some of our other technologies include casting, mold making, machine fabricating, finishing, setting, jewelry work, restoration, engraving, braiding and plating.

Interested retailers can call 888-668-3551 for more information.

Are you a consumer wanting to have a piece of jewelry custom made? Please contact one of our authorized retailers and tell them you want Custom Shop to make your jewelry dream come true.
