Tired of the wedding band that’s on your finger? It’s okay to consider ways to redesign your wedding band. Rejuvenation of the wedding band is adding an interesting twist on wedding band longevity. More and more people are taking aspects of their existing bridal jewelry and creating something new out of it. With the help of a local jeweler and Novell’s Custom Shop, it’s easy to make an old idea something fresh. The best part is that nothing necessarily has been thrown away. It’s just being redesigned or rejuvenated.

The wedding band is integrated into everyday life. After all – you are supposed to wear it all the time. Yet it’s not a surprise that over time you might find yourself wanting something new. Redesigning allows the ring to essentially grow with the wearer. This concept can apply to both rings that have been inherited (i.e. passed down from a relative), and pieces that have simply been outgrown.

Inherited engagement rings or wedding bands carry a degree of sentimental value unmatched by other articles of jewelry. Keep in mind that it is possible to retain some sentiment while making a new ring that has your own distinctive touch. This can be accomplished through preservation of a particular component – such as a gem stones or metal. In many cases, metal from an old design can be melted and used for the new one. Stones can be reset as well.

Take for instance my Mom – who wanted to make changes to the ring she was married in. She decided to combine her engagement ring and wedding band into one piece. This combination was a means to create a practical, unique and most importantly meaningful ring. It turned out to be a rather creative process. Mom could preserve the diamond from the original engagement ring and use it in a new platinum band. This new style was set with intricately placed diamonds from her original wedding band. It represents the idea of renewal in it’s entirely – adopting the new while simultaneously preserving and enhancing the old.

And guess what? She absolutely loves it!

Alternative Metals vs Precious Metals for Wedding Bands

A wedding band is not only a symbol of love and commitment, it can be a lasting family heirloom to be treasured from generation to generation. With the surging popularity of alternative metals tungsten (which can break – see picture), titanium and cobalt, more and more men are settling for a lesser wedding band. Whether found in a jewelry store for $300 or online for $30, alternative metals have a place in the working world, but their place in the wedding world may not be as practical. Precious metals have value throughout the years. Alternative metals do not. While most brides would not think about a wedding cake made from a mix in a microwave, many grooms settle for the cheapest wedding band available. By why?

The Argument for Precious Metals
Precious metal wedding bands can be refinished and resized a reasonable amount during the life of the ring.  While gold scratches off, platinum and palladium wedding bands lose little mass when they are refinished. Many jewelers will say that platinum scratches easily. The truth is that the platinum is being pushed around, and a platinum ring will not lose much mass due to normal wear-and tear. Platinum is worth the investment.

Why is Resizing and Refinishing a Ring Important?
According to Fitness.com, most adults’ activity level decreases as they get older, and therefore are more likely to gain weight. In a new study published in the journal Families, Systems, & Health (as reported by WomensHealth.com), men are more likely to gain weight than single guys as they get older as well. Married men surveyed were 25 percent more likely to be overweight; therefore, it can be estimated that one in four men have to be concerned that their finger size will change.

With the above highlighted facts in mind, brides and grooms-to-be (particularly the grooms) should keep precious metals in the front of their minds as their metal of choice. Yes – with men, cost is likely an issue after spending (and in many cases overspending) on the wedding venue, cake, catering, invitations and a laundry list of other wedding-related needs. Many times, a man getting married has spent little on jewelry for themselves, and therefore may be reluctant to spend a lot on a wedding band. But this should change. If it’s cheap, it has its drawbacks. The HuffingtonPost.com illustrates how the average couple spends between $1,000 and $1,600 on their wedding bands. Keeping your wedding band precious metal also has an added incentive – a father can hand his wedding band down to his son or grandson, and it will have value. An alternative metal wedding band has as much value as materials found in Home Depot. Let the hardware store sell you tungsten and titanium for your tools. Let your jeweler sell you platinum, palladium or gold as your bridal jewelry.

Rose gold is sometimes called pink gold or red gold, and many years ago is was identified as Russian gold.  Rose gold jewelry will seldom tarnish. Its warm, earthy color is flattering to the skin. Rose gold also blends well with many gem colors. When choosing rose gold for your wedding band or jewelry, keep these few basic facts in mind:

•    The higher the karat content (14kt, 18kt, and 24kt), the deeper the color will buy. A piece of jewelry created in 14kt rose gold will appear lighter or less rich in color than a piece of jewelry created in 18kt rose gold. Also, the higher the karat, then the longer the color will last. Every day wear-and-tear will show on almost any piece of jewelry.

•    When it comes to rose gold, subtle shades are trending as popular these days. Bright pink is not as popular as a more muted blush-like tone.

•    If you are looking for a rose gold piece of jewelry featuring gemstones, champagne diamonds and brown diamonds appear stunning. Morganite is also a gemstone that looks fantastic with rose gold (they are available in pastel shades), and the combination of morganite and white diamonds is especially appealing.

•    You care for a piece of rose gold jewelry in the same manner as any piece of gold jewelry. A soft cloth, warm water and a mild detergent is all you need to keep your rose gold jewelry clean. Every so often, you can bring your design to your local jeweler to polish out any scratches. All jewelry will show signs of every day wearing. Wedding rings and engagement rings in particular come in contact with a lot of different surfaces.

•    Men can wear rose gold as well! Rose gold wedding rings are becoming more and more popular for men, whether the design is all one color or mixed with a white metal.  Novell has recently just designed over two dozen rose gold rings for men because vendors have been noticing the demand. Due to rising metal markets, the merchandise has been created with specific lower price-points in mind. So if you are in the market for a great rose gold ring – keep on the look-out!

Kansas City jewelry store – and authorized Novell wedding band retailer – Tivol now features Novell wedding bands on their website. Tivol is a relatively new customer that carries a great selection of classic designs and newer wedding band styles.

In 1910, Charles Tivol opened a jewelry shop in downtown Kansas City. Perched on a bench, he carefully crafted each piece of jewelry and set a timeless standard for enduring workmanship and style.Charles also handed down his unrelenting passion for quality. His son Harold began working in the store as a boy and now serves as chairman of the company. Under Harold’s leadership, a second store was opened in 1951 on the Country Club Plaza. Soon, it was outselling the downtown store, and the two later merged.

Nearly a century after its doors opened, Tivol‘s tradition continues with its third generation. Under the leadership of Harold’s daughter Cathy, Tivol has continued to flourish. A second location was opened in 1994 in Johnson County’s Hawthorne Plaza. Tivol added a third location in 2006 at Briarcliff Village in the heart of the Northland.

Now that the business has attained the 100-year mark, Tivol is going stronger than ever, maintaining our tradition of offering the world’s most beautiful jewelry and timepieces in a variety of price ranges.
